Air France baggage allowance depends on your fare, cabin, route and operating airline. Economy Basic includes a small under-seat bag; a cabin suitcase needs the relevant option or eligible status. Other Economy fares may include a cabin bag. For checked luggage, read the allowance on your ticket rather than assuming every Air France booking includes a suitcase.
Does Air France Basic include a carry-on bag?
A small bag and an overhead cabin bag are different items. Air France’s cabin-baggage rules specify Basic’s small-bag allowance and the separate Hand Baggage option. Flying Blue Gold members and above can bring a cabin bag without buying that option; travelers without that qualifying status should check whether the option has been added.
That distinction matters when comparing prices. A fare that looks cheaper can be less suitable if you need an overhead suitcase and checked luggage. Do not decide from the word “Economy” alone: expand the fare inclusions and check which bags are shown before payment.
What are Air France’s personal-item and cabin-bag sizes?
| Bag | Maximum dimensions |
|---|---|
| Small under-seat bag | 40 × 30 × 15 cm |
| Overhead cabin bag | 55 × 35 × 25 cm, including wheels and handles |
These dimensions come from Air France’s authorized-baggage page. A backpack is not automatically a personal item: its packed dimensions still have to fit the smaller limit. Measure the filled bag, including anything that protrudes, before relying on a product description such as “airline approved.”
How much cabin-baggage weight does Air France allow?
Air France lists a combined cabin limit of 12 kg in Economy and Premium, and 18 kg in Business and La Première. This is a combined limit for the allowed items, not an allowance for each bag. Premium normally permits two cabin bags plus a small bag; departures from the US have a one-cabin-bag plus one-small-bag restriction under the airline’s published guidance.

How many checked bags are included on Air France?
Air France’s current checked-baggage tab gives the following cabin ranges. The exact number depends on the purchased fare, with applicable status benefits considered separately. Check the offer or My Bookings rather than assuming every fare in a cabin includes the top end of the range.
| Cabin | Included pieces by fare | Per-bag weight |
|---|---|---|
| Economy | 0–2 | Up to 23 kg |
| Premium | 0–2 | Up to 23 kg |
| Business | 1–2 | Up to 32 kg |
| La Première | 3 | Up to 32 kg |
The standard checked-size limit is 158 cm total: length + width + height, including pockets, wheels and handles. Premium can have no checked bag on some fares; Business can include one rather than two. Those exceptions are why checking the fare matters even in a higher cabin.
The number of included pieces is separate from the per-bag weight limit. A ticket with no checked allowance does not become a one-bag ticket merely because you have packed below 23 kg. Likewise, a higher cabin does not mean unlimited pieces. Look for the checked-bag count on the actual offer.
To interpret a receipt, check whether baggage is displayed as a piece count or a weight allowance, which passenger it applies to, and which flights it covers. If the confirmation and fare display disagree, ask the issuer to confirm the entitlement before buying an extra bag.
Status can add to the ticket allowance. On the checked-baggage tab, Air France lists one extra piece for Flying Blue Silver and Gold, and two for Platinum and Ultimate. Confirm the eligible traveler’s status on the booking and any partner-flight conditions before relying on that benefit.
How much does extra baggage cost on Air France?
There is no single fee that fits every itinerary. Air France’s extra-baggage page directs travelers to the booking flow or My Bookings for the price of additional options. Check the exact direction, passenger and bag before comparing the total with a higher fare that includes baggage.
Do not assume buying online always brings a discount: the official page excludes flights to and from the United States and Canada from its general additional-bag online-discount offer. Get the quote for your itinerary. Keep the receipt and check that the purchase applies to the intended traveler and flight.
What if my Air France bag is overweight or oversized?
An extra piece, an overweight piece and an oversized piece are different situations. The airline’s extra and overweight baggage rules distinguish these options. A checked bag above its permitted weight may require an overweight payment, and a bag over 32 kg needs a different transport arrangement. Extra size can create a separate issue even when weight is acceptable.
Measure length, width and height, then add them for the checked-size total. For example, a fictional bag measuring 75 × 50 × 30 cm totals 155 cm. That is below 158 cm, but you must still check its weight, piece entitlement and contents. This example is arithmetic, not approval of a particular suitcase.
How do I add a cabin bag or checked bag?
- Find the booking on the airline’s official website using the requested reference and passenger details.
- Review the current bag count before adding anything.
- Choose the correct option: cabin bag, additional checked bag, or guidance for overweight/oversized baggage.
- Confirm the traveler, flight direction, price and available purchase deadline.
- Save the receipt and recheck the updated booking.
For help locating and managing the reservation, see our Air France booking-management guide. The current fare display and airline baggage pages should decide the allowance. If a ticket was issued elsewhere and the option is unavailable online, ask that seller to check the booking.
Do the same baggage rules apply on partner flights?
Not necessarily. Read the “operated by” line for every segment, even when the flight number begins with AF. Air France warns that partner-operated flights can have different cabin rules. Check each operator’s cabin limits and ask the ticket issuer which checked-baggage rules have been disclosed for the full itinerary.
Do not confuse a partner-operated through journey with a self-transfer on separate tickets. Our self-transfer flight guide explains why separate bookings need additional checks for collecting and rechecking luggage.
What baggage can I bring for an infant?
Family allowances require a separate check. Air France’s family-travel page describes a 10 kg checked bag for an infant travelling without a seat, except when the ticket conditions do not include checked baggage. Strollers and car seats have their own transport conditions. Do not automatically add an adult allowance for a lap infant.

Frequently asked questions
Can I bring a backpack and a suitcase on Air France Basic?
A small backpack may qualify as the included small bag if it meets the size limit. An overhead suitcase needs the relevant cabin-bag option or qualifying status. Check the packed sizes and fare entitlement separately.
Is Air France Premium’s cabin weight 12 kg per bag?
No. The published 12 kg limit is combined across the permitted cabin items. Bag counts and US-departure restrictions also need checking.
Does a free gate-check mean oversized baggage is free?
No. Air France may check a compliant cabin bag because overhead space is limited. That is different from bringing a bag that exceeds your fare, size or weight allowance.
