United MileagePlus miles are reward miles you earn from eligible United and partner flights, United credit cards, shopping, dining and travel partners. You can redeem them for United flights, partner-airline awards, upgrades and selected travel purchases.
Two important rules: United miles do not expire, and United does not use a fixed award chart. The number of miles needed for a flight changes according to route, cabin, date and availability.
How Much Are United Miles Worth?
United Airlines does not assign MileagePlus miles a fixed cash value. NerdWallet currently estimates them at about 1.2 cents each when redeemed for award travel.
| United miles | Approximate benchmark value |
|---|---|
| 10,000 | $120 |
| 25,000 | $300 |
| 50,000 | $600 |
| 100,000 | $1,200 |
Your actual value can be higher or lower.
Use this calculation before redeeming:
(Cash fare − award taxes/fees) ÷ miles required × 100 = cents per mile
For example, if a $650 flight costs 40,000 miles plus $50 in taxes:
($650 − $50) ÷ 40,000 × 100 = 1.5 cents per mile
That is better than the current 1.2-cent benchmark. As a simple rule, try to get at least 1.2 cents per mile when possible.
Do United Miles Expire?
No. United MileagePlus miles do not expire. You do not need to fly, shop or redeem miles every year to keep your balance active.

How Do You Earn United Miles in 2026?
United changed its mileage-earning structure for tickets purchased on or after April 2, 2026. For eligible standard United fares, members without an eligible United card now earn:
| MileagePlus status | Miles per $1 |
|---|---|
| General | 3 |
| Premier Silver | 5 |
| Premier Gold | 6 |
| Premier Platinum | 7 |
| Premier 1K | 9 |
Eligible primary United cardholders earn more. A general member with a qualifying United card earns 6 MileagePlus miles per dollar from United, before additional miles earned from using the card itself to pay for the ticket.
Another important 2026 change: general MileagePlus members without an eligible United card no longer earn award miles on newly purchased Basic Economy tickets under the updated rules.
You can also earn miles through eligible:
- Star Alliance and other airline partners
- JetBlue flights through the Blue Sky partnership
- United credit cards
- MileagePlus Shopping and Dining
- Hotels and rental cars
MileagePlus members can now both earn and redeem miles on eligible JetBlue flights.
How Do You Book a Flight With United Miles?
Sign in to your MileagePlus account, search your route and select Miles instead of Money.
United will display the current award price for each flight. There is no reliable rule such as “12,500 miles for every domestic flight” or “30,000 miles to Europe.”
Award prices are dynamic.
One useful 2026 advantage applies to eligible United cardholders:
- At least 10% off United-operated award flights
- At least 15% off for eligible cardholders who also hold Premier status
Cardholders can also receive access to additional Saver Award inventory.
For example, an award normally priced at 15,000 miles could cost 13,500 miles with a 10% cardholder discount.
What Is the Best Way to Use United Miles?
Flight awards should usually be your first comparison.
Good uses can include:
- United-operated award flights
- Star Alliance and partner awards
- JetBlue flights
- International premium-cabin awards
- Saver Awards when available
Before redeeming, compare the mileage price with the cash fare. Avoid spending a large number of miles merely because an option is available.
United also offers non-flight redemptions, but always calculate the value because merchandise and other rewards may produce less value per mile than flights.

Can You Transfer United Miles to Someone Else?
Yes, but it can be expensive. United currently charges:
- $7.50 per 500 miles transferred
- $30 processing fee per transaction
Transfers can range from 500 to 100,000 miles.
For example, transferring 10,000 miles would cost approximately $180, before any applicable taxes. That usually makes transferring poor value.
Better option: MileagePlus Miles Pooling
United allows MileagePlus members to combine miles in a pool without paying transfer fees.
A pool can contain up to five MileagePlus members, making it useful for families or groups saving toward one award.
You also do not need to transfer miles merely to book a ticket for someone else. In many cases, you can use miles from your account and issue the award ticket in another traveler’s name.

Should You Buy United Miles?
Usually only when you are slightly short of an award.
United currently lists its standard purchase price at $35 per 1,000 miles, plus applicable taxes and fees. That works out to 3.5 cents per mile, far above the approximate 1.2-cent redemption benchmark.
Buying miles makes more sense when:
- You need a small top-up for an award already available.
- United is running a strong mileage sale.
- The resulting award is significantly cheaper than paying cash.
Do not buy a large balance speculatively.
The Bottom Line
United MileagePlus is most valuable when you understand three things: miles do not expire, award prices are dynamic, and redemption value matters more than the number of miles in your account.
Also remember the major changes: non-cardholders earn fewer miles on eligible United fares, eligible cardholders earn more and receive at least 10% off United award flights, and MileagePlus members can earn and redeem miles with JetBlue.
Before redeeming, calculate your cents-per-mile value and compare the award with the cash fare. That one check can prevent thousands of miles from being wasted. Need help booking a United flight or using your MileagePlus miles? Call Flying Getaway at +1 (646) 814-6001 for booking assistance.
