Lufthansa Economy Basic and Economy Light are not the same baggage product. On short- and medium-haul flights, Basic includes a personal item; Light adds a cabin bag but no standard checked bag. Long-haul allowances differ, so check the route and fare on your ticket before packing or comparing prices.

What baggage does Lufthansa Economy Basic include?

On selected European routes, Lufthansa Economy Basic includes one personal item measuring up to 40 × 30 × 15 cm, stored under the seat. It does not include the standard overhead cabin bag or checked suitcase. An eligible status benefit or a purchased option can change what you may bring.

Do not carry that rule over to every ticket labelled Basic. Lufthansa’s Basic page specifically says a long-haul Basic fare includes a personal item, cabin bag and checked bag. Read the allowance shown for your exact journey; the same fare word can describe different route products.

What is the difference between Lufthansa Basic and Light?

Short / medium-haul fareStandard included baggage
Economy Basic1 personal item
Economy LightPersonal item + 1 cabin bag up to 8 kg
Comfort / Comfort Green / FlexPersonal item + cabin bag + 1 checked bag up to 23 kg

This comparison follows Lufthansa’s current free-baggage table for short- and medium-haul journeys. It does not include additional status entitlements or override the allowance on your ticket. A checked bag bought as an option should be shown separately from the base fare.

What is Lufthansa’s carry-on size and weight limit?

Lufthansa’s cabin-baggage rules specify a standard cabin bag up to 55 × 40 × 23 cm and 8 kg. The personal item is smaller: 40 × 30 × 15 cm. An Economy cabin-bag entitlement normally means one such cabin bag, not an unlimited number of items up to a combined weight.

Measure your packed bag, including protruding parts, and weigh it before leaving home. A soft backpack that fits the dimensions empty may become too deep when filled. A shop’s “carry-on” label is not confirmation that it meets Lufthansa’s limits or is included in your fare.

Can I buy a cabin bag on Lufthansa Basic?

Yes, a short-/medium-haul Basic traveler can purchase a cabin-bag option within the airline’s permitted limits. Lufthansa’s Basic guidance says the option is not available to buy at the airport. Arrange it in advance through the available booking channel and check the deadline and confirmation.

A checked-bag purchase is not permission to bring that suitcase into the cabin. If you bought checked baggage, use the bag-drop process. Carrying it to the gate instead can result in a cabin-baggage problem and a charge.

Before buying a new ticket, compare Basic plus the options you need with a higher fare that includes them. Flying Getaway can help compare the total quoted cost for your route and dates: +1 (646) 814-6001. Have your cabin and checked-bag needs ready.

How many checked bags are included on Lufthansa long-haul flights?

Lufthansa’s intercontinental free-baggage table distinguishes the following standard fare allowances. The receipt, route and applicable status benefits still need checking; do not treat Light as one uniform product across every cabin.

Intercontinental fareStandard checked allowance
Economy LightNo checked bag
Economy Class1 × 23 kg
Premium Economy Light1 × 23 kg
Premium Economy Class2 × 23 kg
Business Light1 × 32 kg
Business Class2 × 32 kg
First Class3 × 32 kg

Lufthansa Group’s Light-fare announcement confirms that Premium Economy Light and Business Light on selected intercontinental routes each include one checked bag. Paying for a premium cabin therefore does not automatically include the standard two-bag allowance. Verify that the product is offered on the route you are considering.

What is Lufthansa’s checked-baggage size limit?

The standard checked-size limit is 158 cm total, adding length, width and height. Weight is assessed per piece according to the fare’s allowance. A count such as two bags does not mean you may put their combined permitted weight into a single very heavy suitcase.

For a fictional example, a 70 × 50 × 30 cm bag totals 150 cm. It still needs to meet the weight limit, count allowance and contents rules. An acceptable size does not make a bag free on a fare with no checked luggage included.

How much does extra or overweight Lufthansa baggage cost?

Get the quote for the exact itinerary and problem. Lufthansa’s excess-baggage page distinguishes extra weight, extra size and additional pieces; charges are not one flat amount for all trips. In Economy and Premium Economy, a bag above 23 kg can be excess baggage, subject to the airline’s limits. A piece above 32 kg is not accepted as normal travel baggage.

Use the booking’s additional-baggage options or ask the seller to quote the required bag. Compare this with the fare difference before assuming the cheapest ticket remains cheapest. Keep the purchase receipt and check that the bag applies to the correct traveler and direction.

Do frequent-flyer benefits change Lufthansa baggage allowances?

They can. The Basic page identifies a free cabin bag for eligible HON Circle, Senator and Star Alliance Gold travelers on qualifying flights. Lufthansa’s free-baggage page separately describes status exceptions for some intercontinental Light fares. Eligibility, route exclusions and how the benefit is registered matter.

Do not prepay an extra bag solely because a generic table omits your status; first check the benefit and the required registration process. Equally, do not assume every membership tier provides an extra bag on every Light fare. Make sure the eligible traveler’s details are attached to the reservation.

What if my Lufthansa ticket includes a partner flight?

Read the operating-carrier line for each flight. Lufthansa’s cabin page directs travelers to check each operator’s cabin rules; a flight sold under an LH number can still use another airline’s limits. For checked baggage, inspect the rules disclosed for the whole ticket rather than selecting a standalone chart from whichever carrier allows more.

Confirm baggage handling as well. A connection can require collection for customs or an airport change even when the ticket is a through itinerary. If the flights are separately ticketed, use our self-transfer checklist to identify the additional questions before booking.

What should I check before booking Lufthansa?

  • Short-/medium-haul or long-haul product, and the exact fare name.
  • Personal item and overhead cabin bag shown as separate entitlements.
  • Checked-bag count, per-piece weight and size.
  • Partner-operated segments and any local cabin restrictions.
  • Applicable status benefit and how it is registered.
  • Total fare after the bag options you need are included.

For a group trip, our Lufthansa group-booking guide covers a different reservation process. Have each traveler’s luggage needs clear before requesting a quote rather than assuming the group shares one combined allowance.

Frequently asked questions

Does Lufthansa Economy Light include a cabin bag?

The standard Light allowance includes a personal item and one cabin bag up to 8 kg, subject to the applicable flight restrictions. A standard checked bag is not included in Economy Light unless an applicable benefit or purchased option changes the allowance.

Does Lufthansa Basic always mean personal item only?

No. That describes the selected short-/medium-haul Basic product. Lufthansa’s official page distinguishes long-haul Basic, which includes a personal item, cabin bag and checked bag. Check the ticketed allowance.

Can I buy a Basic cabin-bag option at the gate?

Do not plan on it. Lufthansa says the Basic cabin-bag option is not sold at the airport. Arrange it before travel through the available booking channel and deadline.
